Bergamo Alta (also known as City High or, in the past, the city, as opposed to villages) is a medieval city, surrounded by ramparts erected in the sixteenth century, when Venetian, which was added to the existing fortifications to make it a fortress impregnable.
Bergamo is still one of the four Italian cities (along with Ferrara, Lucca and Grosseto), whose old town was completely surrounded by walls which, in turn, have kept almost intact their original appearance over the centuries.

City High, in addition to host a botanic garden site in Colle Open, is also home to a faculty of Languages and Literature, whose prestige is recognized in Europe.
City High can be reached on foot through the scorlazzini (stairways that connect the more points the lower part of the city), car (even if it is prohibited during the summer and weekends throughout the year on Sunday afternoon), with the funicular or by bus.

Other museums are the Museum Bergamo Donizetti, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAMeC), the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, the Historical Museum, the Museum Matris Domini, the Archaeological, the Museum of Natural Sciences, l ' Orto Botanico.
Site in S. Alessandro is the sixteenth-century Monastery of St. Benedict, still active at a cloistered community.
